Wardrobe Planning for Family Portraits

Wardrobe planning for family portraits is a very important part of creating an amazing portrait. This is a step that cannot be overlooked or under thought. Incorporating varying solids, with light patterns, layers and textures helps to create depth within your wardrobe that also translates to you final images. Choosing a color palette that compliments the environment and season is also essential to completing a look.

Since we live in the middle of the desert, our environment is most often filled with earthy tones. You want to select a color palette that compliments this. For instance, a deep rust orange might be a better option over a pumpkin or neon orange. You also want to consider the season.

Styling for Fall

Wardrobe planning for family portraits in fall should include a color palette with warm and deep colors and lots of layers and textures.

Styling for Spring

Wardrobe planning for family portraits in spring should include a color palette that is soft and airy incorporating light patterns and florals into the palette.

The idea is to not be matchy matchy, but rather compliment each other with your chosen palette. You want to decide on a color palette that includes 3-5 colors to include throughout your wardrobe. Then utilizing that palette incorporate solids with patterns, textures such as lace and knit combined with non-textured pieces. Laying can include anything from a sun hat for spring, to tights, cardigans and jackets for fall.

I have put together a Style Board on Pinterest that has a ton of examples for you. I have also pinned several items from my favorite vendors and everything on the board was pinned with our desert location in mind. So, you may see a trend in colors and styles that work well for our environment. Also, if you see something you like, you can click through on most items and shop directly from the vendors.

I also have a small number of dresses on hand in my own Client Closet that Clients are welcome to borrow for their session. You can view them below. Please feel free to let me know if you want to set up a a time to try on anything from my Client Closet.

I am very good at helping to style my clients for their sessions. If you need feedback and assistance with styling, you can send me an email and I will assist you in putting together a personalized style board for your portrait session. If you need some more inspiration, check out these awesomely styled family sessions:

I had the most STUNNING maternity session last night at one of my favorite places. We actually rescheduled this maternity session twice due to winds and changed locations last minute but it ended up being totally worth it!!!

Every scene was like a painting with this gorgeous mama. It’s that kind of session that makes you so excited to edit it. I can’t wait to dig into this session and share more of it.

Oh man! I love maternity sessions so much. This beautiful mama requested my white dress from my client closet which ended up being absolutely stunning with the backlight (more to come from that very soon).

However, I brought this one as well from @reclamationdesigncompany on a whim for a couple of images at the end.I love how this one really accentuates the curves with the shear material and this plum color paired with her husband’s teal shirt works so perfectly in the blue hour light.

Wardrobe is everything! When you pick the right colors with the right time of day and the right location, it all matters.

Living in Las Vegas, I often see a lot of out of town clients. This means they, of course, want to shoot in our most iconic locations. So when I get a request to shoot at Red Rock from an out of town client, I always end it with this epic view of.... The Red Rocks!!! How could I not? Also, can we appreciate how their wardrobe choices are perfect for this shot?

Heading back out this evening to this same spot for a Maternity Session. Crossing my fingers these stupid winds calm down.
